Simple Basic Chunky Slippers

Simple Basic Chunky Slippers

Posted by Kathleen Logan on 6th Sep 2023

I hated these kind of slippers when I was a little girl. They were made with a yarn called Phentex, 100% polyester. The yarn was so hard and impervious that it would chafe the bottom of my feet. So here I am almost sixty years later and the pattern shows up in my inbox. I put aside all previous notions around the Basic Chunky Slipper and decided to to knit a pair. Two yarns made themselves known to me while I stood looking at the shelves with pattern in hand; Berocco Remix Chunky and Lana Gatto Patagonia. I began with the Remix, imagining a beautiful PomPom on the Aqua Blue colour.

The pattern is super simple and the design is intriguing for its simplicity. I was reminded of medieval paintings and the shoes that people wear in them. Sew some leather on the bottom and you have long lasting footwear. I finished knitting one in a couple of hours and the following day completed the other. It was fun, it was simple and they fit my feet. I can see now why there was baskets of these slippers at many of the front doors of my childhood. Remix is a yarn made from recycled materials 30% Nylon, 27% Cotton, 24% Acrylic, 10% Silk, 9% Linen, I am imaging it will be so much better that the slippers of old.

The Jacques Cousteau Hat is a simple knit. This week I choose our beloved Rowan Felted Tweed DK in a colour that my son Ben wanted and cast on. I knit this hat between the activities of my day. Picking up where I left off easily. Felted Tweed has a lightness of being that is perfect for hats and simple sweaters. A yarn that deserves a special place in all knitters library of yarn.

Summer is on its way out, fall beckons and slippers and hats will be needed. It is the best time of year for knitting with yarns that brings warmth and comfort. I encourage you to enjoy something simple.

Happy fall,\
