Meaning:
Having no specific pattern, purpose or objective. synonym: Chance
Happening, done or chosen by chance rather than according to a plan.
A random sample or method is on in which all the people or things involved have an equal chance of being chosen.

Last winter I randomly picked 12 colours of Estelle Outback Chunky to make a striped sweater. I chose the Carbeth Cardigan Pattern by Kate Davies, found two dice in a drawer at home, chose my size and threw the dice.

I gave each colour a number 1-12. when I had determined the colour I rolled the dice again for the number of rows to knit in the chosen colour. It was fun, surprising and I liked how it was developing. I just had to chase the bear out of the compost. Then I put the sweater down for six months to deal with all of the random events in my life.

This week as I organized my WIP’s (works in progress) I reacquainted myself with the Random Carbeth. The paper with the numbers for the colours was lost and I needed to figure out where I was in the sweater. I found the pattern on my computer, I put all of the colours of yarn in one bag and decided to close my eyes and just pick a colour. I found the dice in a needle bag and began to knit.

Participating in the Randomness of creating a sweater like this is an interesting experience. I found myself wanting to control and change the process. Thoughts like;
“If I knit one or two more rows I think it will look better”,
“What do you mean that’s the colour”,
“Maybe I should just leave the whole “game” and knit it differently”.
I have chosen to stay the course in my Random approach, trusting in something that remains unclear.

It has been fun and as I finish the second sleeve I am really looking forward to what the yoke and neck will be like. So if you have a project that is asking to be many colours this is a fun way to explore the roll of the dice. May the Randomness of life bring joy this week.
